Indian – Portuguese War for Goa December 1961

Follow
History Class

In December 1961, India annexed the Portuguese Indian territories of Goa, Daman and Diu, after a short war with Portugal. The territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli were lost to the Indians in 1954. The ratio of forces was more than 1 to 10 in favor of the Indians, and after 2 days of conflict the Portuguese under Governor General Manuel António Vassalo e Silva decided to surrender to avoid unnecessary losses. After 451 years of rule, Portugal finally lost its Indian colonies, who were incorporated into the Republic of India. During the Indian invasion of Goa, Portugal was led by prime minister António de Oliveira Salazar, while India by prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
