Join us on this short trip north of Tucson, AZ for an inside look at the reopened Biosphere 2 in 2021!

About an hour trip from our home in Tucson, AZ lies the world's largest earth science experiment: Biosphere II in Oracle, AZ. Operated by the University of Arizona (go wildcats!), the facilities are now reopened for a selfguided tour of the various environments, including: coastal fog desert, the orchard, savannah wetlands, mangrove forest, the world's largest experimental ocean, and a rainforest.

The experiment dates back to the 1990s when a group of scientists were tasked with living inside the sealed biosphere for two years to see if we could sustain life on mars. While the experiment ultimately fell victim to unforeseen circumstances (curing concrete eventually consumed much of the oxygen within, causing the experiment to "fail" due to needing to pump in oxygen from the outside world), the facilities remain open as a crucial hub for earth science research today.
