Installing a Fish Finder on the Old Jon Boat

In this video, I install a fish finder on the old jon boat. This is now the 3rd boat I have put this fish finder on.

I wanted to install it in a semipermanent way, in case I want to take it off again sometime in the future, or upgrade to a different one. The fish finder I use is the Lowrance Elite 3x.

I cut out a square from an old plastic cutting board thats about a 1/2" thick and glue it to the bottom of the jon boat using 3M Marine Adhesive 5200. After 24 hours it is cured, and supposedly won't come off. This is what I mounted the transducer to.

This way, if the fish finder isn't reading right, I can adjust it or move it, without drilling holes in the boat. The wire just goes up and over the top of the boat (again, I wanted to do a semipermanent install).

It then goes into an ammo box, which contains the small 12 volt battery and extra wire zip tied off. When transporting, the box will hold the fish finder screen, and even the wire can be pulled into the box. The holes look large because they needed to allow the plug to pass through.

I made a simple mounting plate out of spare wood on the edge of the seat, and screwed it into the sides, rather than the top (again, I'm always changing stuff around and didn't want noticeable holes on the top of the seat). I also added a rod holder for the fun of it. It's not pressure treated wood, but I did add some poly to it, which should help protect it.

As you can see at the end of the video, you can see it working. The screen looks like its flickering but I think its just the sunlight disagreeing with the camera, it works fine. I catch a few fish for you too!

You should always add an inline fuse to your fish finder, sometimes they don't come with them, like mine.

Check out my other video from a few months back when I gave the old jon boat a facelift by painting it, taking old decals off, etc.
