Hi everyone! I am a second year internal medicine resident at Stanford! This video is about the difference between intern year and second year of residency! This video is helpful for any medical student who is starting residency and wanting to know what to expect!

In the first year of residency, regardless of residency, you do a LOT more of the grunt work and get to learn the insandouts of the hospital. Interns gain handson experience while focusing on core clinical skills and patient communication; they are supposed to act as the main doctor for their patients which is the fundamentals of what it means to be a doctor! You will also be the primary point of contact for ALL of your patients helping coordinate care by speaking with case managers, nurses, and even the patient's family! At almost any institution (and regardless of specialty), interns collaborate with nurses, specialists, and attendings to coordinate complex patient care. This is such a big part of what it means to be a doctor, which is why it needs to happen right away starting from day 1! As interns, you will also witness the challenges and triumphs of navigating electronic health records under pressure. Charting, ordering tests, and documenting patient information will become second nature. While initially challenging, proficiency in EHRs is essential for modern medical practice.

In the second year of residency, residents take on more responsibility, managing patients and making clinical decisions. This also often means that residents guide interns and medical students, fostering a supportive learning environment. You also often get to explore the diverse rotations residents undertake, potentially sparking an interest in a specific field. For example, if you know that you want to be a nephrologist or cardiologist, you can do more rotations focused on nephrology and cardiology.
