Into Alaska Terrifying Windstorm Hits Hard |10Days Family Camping in Alaskan & BC Wilderness E.7

Our 5000 km drive to the putin over, we finally begin our 10day wilderness canoe trip down the Lower Stikine River which will take us through much of Northern British Columbia and into Alaska. We hade our two kids and dog with us. Our son Hudson is two and our son Wesley is 5. Wesley has Fox G1 Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder which has given him severe disabilities. We paddled an 18’ Nova Craft Prospector canoe which is able to carry 1,400 lbs. We weren’t near our weight capacity but it was hard finding room for all our gear.

Finally on the river, we began the trip in nearperfect conditions. We run a few rapids and float past the iconic Three Sisters Rocks that majestically rise from the river.

The day is filled with excitement as we navigate thrilling rapids, skillfully avoiding the waves and discovering the perfect spot to set up camp. Watch as I land a beautiful Dolly Varden Trout, and we begin the evening routine of creating a cozy campsite along the riverbank.

As night falls, our peaceful surroundings take a dramatic turn. Large owls, seemingly protesting our presence, circle our campsite. We witness one of these majestic creatures perched on a tree right beside our tent, creating a mesmerizing nocturnal scene. Soon after, a sudden and intense windstorm hits, testing our resilience. With the wind howling and our tent threatened, we put all our energy into securing it against the powerful gusts. The poles bend under the force, creating a moment of tension and fear, especially for the kids.

Ultimately, all is well as the weather subsides. The kids drift off to sleep, and my wife Tori and I savour a late supper featuring the freshly caught fish. Join us as we navigate the highs and lows of day one in the Alaskan and BC wilderness, where nature's unpredictability adds an extra layer of excitement to our family canoe expedition.
