Mercyful fate would officially form in 1981 and after a couple of lineup changes the members would be King Diamond, Hank Sherman, Michael Denner, Timi Hansen and Kim Ruzz. This lineup would span the first era of the band up until 1985.

Satanism would play a big part of the band's image and philosophy right from the start. It’s not exactly clear when King Diamond first got his hands on the Satanic Bible, but he states that he lived by its teachings long before reading it.
