Intro to Groundwater Flow Modeling 03: Physical Characteristics of Aquifer (Porosity u0026 Permeability)

In this video, we dive deeper into the essential physical properties of aquifers, starting with porosity, which is the ratio between voids and the total volume of porous media. We explore various examples, showing how clay and gravel differ significantly in porosity. Next, we tackle permeability, explaining how fluids flow through porous materials. We highlight the proportional relationship between sediment size and permeability, with gravel having the highest permeability compared to clay. We also discuss the role of rocks and fractures in water transmission.

We then introduce hydraulic conductivity, a measure of a material's ability to conduct water, and explain its direct proportionality to permeability. Discover how different materials, from gravel to clay, vary in hydraulic conductivity. Transmissivity, another vital characteristic, is also covered. Learn how it represents the amount of water transmitted horizontally by the full thickness of an aquifer and how it's calculated as the product of hydraulic conductivity and saturated thickness.

Finally, we explore storage coefficients, including specific storage, storativity, and specific yield. Understand the differences in storage parameters between confined and unconfined aquifers, and how these parameters impact groundwater modelling.
