Inversion and eversion of the foot (ankle) are special body movements used in anatomy. Inversion causes the sole of the foot to turn toward the body's midline (medially). Eversion of the foot has the sole moving away from the body's midline (laterally).

Inversion and Eversion Mnemonic: Inversion starts with "In," so that can help you remember the orientation of the sole during that movement. To "evert" means to turn outward, and that's exactly what eversion does.

Inversion and eversion terms are also used to describe sprains. Inversion sprains affect the ligaments on the lateral side of the foot/ankle, while eversion sprains affect the ligaments on the medial side of the foot/ankle.
