The pseudotumor cerebri syndrome (PTCS) is a perplexing syndrome of increased intracranial pressure without a spaceoccupying lesion.” Pseudotumor cerebri is associated headaches, papilledema, vision changes, or pulsatile tinnitus in the setting of normal imaging and cerebrospinal fluid studies. It mainly affects overweight women of childbearing age, however women of all ages, men, and children of both sexes may also be affected. There are multiple hypotheses about the etiology of pseudotumor cerebri including decreased cerebrospinal fluid absorption and/or increased cerebrospinal fluid production. When no secondary cause is identified, the syndrome is termed “Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH). An accurate diagnosis is imperative to initiating appropriate treatment, which may incorporate medical or surgical modalities. The main goal of therapy is the preservation of vision.
