As Iraq launched the invasion of Iran in September 1980, Iranian F5 pilots found themselves flying risky airstrikes into Iraqi airspace. Counterair missions were given high priority and in this video, we will focus on two missions against Iraqi airbases at Kirkuk and Mosul, flown by two groups of four F5Es each from the 2nd Tactical Fighter Base. On these missions, Iranian pilots faced MiGs and SAMs and Capt Yadollah SharifiRa’ad (also spelled Sharifirad) would get a chance to prove why he would eventually become the most successful F5 pilot of the IranIraq War.
