Has a Tarlov cyst been found on the imaging of your spine/ lumbar back? Are you wondering if the cyst is causing your lower back, buttock/glute, or sciatic nerve pain (sciatica)? If so, start with asking yourself these questions: Do you have good days and bad days? Good hours and bad hours? If your symptoms are intermittent (they change or fluctuate), then consider this as evidence AGAINST a Tarlov cyst causing your pain. Why? Because Tarlov cysts aren't more present one moment and less present the next... and therefore, if they are the cause of pain then the pain should be as consistent and constant as they are.

For example, if your symptoms are worse on Monday, but better on Tuesday... it's not because your Tarlov cyst was there on Monday and not on Tuesday structural issues (like a Tarlov cyst) don't behave like that.

Oftentimes, because people in pain feel justified with a label/clinical diagnosis a Tarlov cyst that pops up on imaging often becomes the "reason why" someone hurts.

As a result, further time, energy, and money is spent on surgeries to remove them, which are often unsuccessful (because Tarlov cysts are often asymptomatic meaning they are there, but cause no pain!).

So, if a Tarlov cyst has been found on your images don't panic... it may have nothing to do with any back/butt/sciatica symptoms you are experiencing.
