A new report has estimated shortterm rentals like Airbnb are earning tens of thousands more per year than longterm rentals in the same area, vacuuming dwellings off the market.

It helps to explain the rapid drain of properties that's contributing to the housing crisis.

But there’s a mooted solution: a ‘cap and trade’ system that research suggests will allow a healthy amount of shortterm rentals, boost the amount of dwellings available to live in and accrue cash for local areas impacted by the tourist surge.
