Is is safe to take supplements with Tamoxifen? Tamoxifen || Dr Liz O'Riordan

Did you know that it could be dangerous to take supplements with Tamoxifen?
When you swallow Tamoxifen it is converted into a much more active form by a group of enzymes called the CYP3 system.

Many supplements are also broken down by this enzyme and that means that there might not be enough enzyme left to work on Tamoxifen meaning that Tamoxifen is much less effective at stopping your cancer coming back

Most doctors won't have heard of all the supplements out there and for good reason. If you eat a healthy, wellbalanced diet, you don't need them. That's why we don't prescribe them

Supplements are also dangerous because they're not regulated. If you buy aspirin it will contain exactly what is says on the tin. But supplements don't need to in fact over 1/3 of supplements sold on Amazon don't contain the ingredients they are meant to
