Is Swimming Good For Getting Rid Of Back Pain

This video provides an answer to a question I am often asked "Is swimming good for getting rid of back pain?"
In this video I explain why many people feel a great relief from completing swimming but I also explain why this is merely a bandaid approach to a much bigger problem and why people who rely on this as their only source of treatment are neglecting the real reasons behind their pain.

The true cause of back pain injuries is not from a lack of swimming. It is from moving poorly repetitively. Common daily activities we think nothing of, are where the injury is formed. Many of us may be able to go through life getting away with some bad movement if it is countered enough with good movement. However the person who does not build reserves and just keeps stealing from their body, will pay the price. The very first thing you should do with your treatment for a bulging disc is to identify your poor movement and eliminate it or change it. If you ignore this, you are likely to suffer repeated episodes that get worse each time.

Swimming provides some great relief for people as it places them into extension in a weightless environment. In daily life people are more prone to sitting and moving in too much flexion which leads to compression of joints and in the case of back pain the disc compression. Swimming provides relief from this repetitive position of pain, but while it provides relief it DOES NOT CHANGE how you continue to move outside the pool.
It also does not improve stability or strength of muscles that are known for weakness and inhibition. So while swimming can provide relief, on it's own it is not an effective remedy.
