Apex Orthopedic Rehabilitation

Is yoga good for flexibility is a question we discuss as patients recover from injury or desire to to improve their flexibility, range of motion and mobility. We generally believe that yoga is a great way to improved your flexilibity in a nonspecific manner. If you don't have any specific concerns we feel it is a great system to improve long term goals for flexility, strength. core strength, balance and relaxation. Many people view it as a form of meditation. That being said various yoga poses are general movmenet pattersn that can improved flexilibity across multiple segments. Similar to doing a squat that can improve the strength at mutiple muscles various poses can improve general flexilibility. However, in order to reach certain goals of flexilibity in certain region performing isolated stretches in particular areas can be a more efficient way to address these restrictions as compared to general yoga positions. Another issues is to truly increase flexilibity by causing a lengthening of various tissues maintaining a structures at end range is most beneficial at a duration of 3060 seconds and this may be less in certain forms of yoga. If you are not seeing improvements in flexibility you may want to look at targeted stretching personalized for your specific concerns.
