Is GERD medicine safe? Taking a PPI for heartburn is safe and fine in the short term. But, taking one of these meds longterm can be unsafe. Here are the 7 to watch for, and make sure you are not taking longterm. Pills such as Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec & Protonix have many worrisome side effects.

Sometimes busy doctors will continue to refill a medication that is not safe to take longterm. Heartburn/GERD meds are one of the therapeutic classes this often happens with. Taking a proton pump inhibitor for 26 weeks is safe and fine. Taking a PPI for many months or years is unsafe and can lead to many of the complications I discuss in this video.

Never thoughtlessly take a prescription pill. Think about every pill, every single day. It is your doctor’s job, but it is ultimately your problem.
