NORTH WEST LEICESTERSHIRE PARISH #6: ISLEY CUM LANGLEY

Isley cum Langley – “Briton’s Wood with a Long Clearing”

Hello again North West Leicestershire, its been a hot minute! Today we’re in a tiny place which will begin a run of three more in your part of the county. Through a swathe of morning mist in early May, I travelled here, to Isley Walton, to cover one of the smallest places Leicestershire has. Isley Walton forms part of the parish of Isley cum Langley, a slither of land so sparsely populated, that its few inhabitants are grouped for statistical purposes, with Breedon on the Hill next door.

Isley cum Langley has two settlements, despite the fact there’s only one we can actually walk around. The second one, Langley, is a private estate with a very interesting history of its own. Isley Walton lies on the A453, just south of East Midlands Airport and the Donington Park Racing Circuit. It was an estate village believe it or not, until it was sold off in the late 1800s. In terms of landmarks, it has a handful but some of them are apparently off limits. These include the church, which, try as I might, I couldn’t work out how to get to. You’ll see what I mean on the main walk.

There are some pretty nifty properties here. The biggest is the Manor House, which stands in front of the church, but you cannot overlook the Toll House either, on the A453.

I’m not going to lie, this one was difficult to cover. Lets see how I got on!
