Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant confirmed on October 17 the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and called on Gaza residents to free the hostages and surrender. Israel's army also confirmed that Sinwar, the architect of the October 7 attack on Israel last year, has been killed in Gaza, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Israel will continue to fight the Islamist militant group Hamas in Gaza until the remaining 101 hostages are released. Sinwar's death represents a major boost to the Israeli military and Netanyahu after a string of highprofile assassinations of prominent leaders of its enemies in recent months.
