Italy’s Massive Triple Triplane – Caproni CA.60 Noviplano [Aircraft Overview #13]

The massive Caproni CA.60 was Italy's first serious attempt at making an aircraft capable of carrying 100 passengers. In fact, in 1921, this was a revolutionary plane. Designed by Count Giovanni Caproni, who had founded the Caproni aircraft manufacturing company in 1908, it shocked anyone who saw it.

It had nine wings, assembled in a triple triplane layout. It had eight powerful engines. It weighed 25 tonnes when fully loaded. Amazingly this aircraft actually flew, albeit briefly. There is still debate as to how well it would have handled in longer sustained flight, but the financial costs of rebuilding it after the crash on its second flight prevented its return to the skies.

The CA.60 featured in the 2013 Studio Ghibli film "The Wind Rises".
