Fantastic Pixel Castle, the company making Ghostcrawler's new MMO "Ghost" showed off a very early look at the MMORPG and I think it's a good reality check for all of us to see just where games start in development.

The use of storebought assets that will later be replaced, the ugliness as they get the basics down. It's the kind of thing a casual fan of the genre will probably never see. I know, because I definitely never saw it until I actually started following some indevelopment games that were showing much more: Indie MMOs

Games like Ashes of Creation, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, Crowfall, Camelot Unchained, Monsters and Memories and more. Games that generally had a vested interest in showing the game as it develops. Being willing to take that risk.

In the cases of many of them it was to get some sort of funding, to show their prototype, show backers and wouldbe investors that what they're working on has legs.

Fantastic Pixel Castle already has that investment, they have a publisher. But they showed it anyway. And yes, you can say its to build some good will with a playerbase that has grown increasingly skeptical after a decade of broken promises, but there's inherent risk involved in allowing this to be your first impression as well.
