It’s Your BACK - NOT Piriformis Syndrome!

Don't miss or overlook the REAL source of your buttock pain. I talk with folks every day who think they have Piriformis Syndrome, but they don’t. They’re actually shocked to find out that their BACK is really the problem/cause of their buttock/glute pain.

Now, you might be thinking, "But Dr. Charlie, I don’t have ANY back pain… my pain is literally just right here in my butt cheek I know it's got to be Piriformis Syndrome."

I’m just telling you, EVEN if you don’t have any back pain at all, stick around until the end of this video… because chances are still high that you’re missing something...
I walk you through some simple tests you can do at home to RULE OUT or make sure that your back isn’t the issue.

But first, here are a couple of key tips you should know:

1. Upstream Problems Cause Downstream Effects
Where you hurt isn’t always why you hurt. Just because your butt hurts, doesn’t mean you have Piriformis Syndrome or a problem there in your butt. It could be referred pain which is when you feel pain in one part of your body, but it’s actually caused by a problem in another area of your body.

The most common place of referred pain from a problem in your back (such as a joint or disc that has been injured or aggravated in some way) is the buttock/glute region... followed by your hamstring, your calf, and even your ankle or foot. And what’s crazy is that you may feel no pain in your back (at the site of injury) and all of your pain in your butt or leg. If you miss this key piece, you could find yourself undergoing treatment for what you/they believe to be Piriformis Syndrome = injections in the butt, stretches for the buttock/glute, deep tissue massages you name it… all aimed at the WRONG target.

Now, what do I mean by "upstream problems cause downstream effects?" Well, your back is the most upstream spot and it can effect ANYTHING downstream. But a downstream problem will not go against the current and impact something upstream.
To make this super simple a back problem can refer pain to anything downstream below it. It can cause butt pain, hamstring pain, knee pains, calf pains, shin pains, heel pains, toe pains… anything. But a problem in the butt (injury to the tissue in the buttock/glute) does NOT refer pain upstream to the back. A hamstring tear does not refer pain upstream to the middle of the butt or back. A calf strain does not refer pain upstream to the hamstring, the butt or the back. I think you get the point.

2. Consider A Common Denominator. It’s common for people who I chat with to have MANY different diagnosis. They feel confused, because they chat with multiple doctor who give them different labels Piriformis Syndrome, sciatica, IT Band Syndrome, hip bursitis, then the foot doctor tells them they have plantar fasciitis, too. But what are the chances that everything falls apart at the same time? NOT high.
So, if you’re experiencing some form of butt or leg pains (pain in multiple areas), is it possible that ONE thing could be causing all of your pains? Absolutely. There could be ONE problem at the root of it all a common denominator or single thread that unifies and explains everything all the symptoms you’re feeling. To be clear, it’s usually upstream the back causing referred pain into many different areas, or a sensitive nervous system (sciatic nerve or brain) that makes you feel pain in various body regions.
