Saturday, March 25, 2023 we celebrated the "Medal of Honor" day for brave heroes while in service of their country. No one deserves this recognition more than Hershel "Woody" Williams. It just so happens that the National Medal Of Honor Day was the day I visited the small island of Iwo Jima were the most fierce battle between the Marines and Japanese which took place in February and March of 1945. Although the Marine Corps won the battle 6,841 Marines gave their lives in defense of our country and all it stands for. Our first glance of Iwo Jima Island was from the airplane as the pilot circled the island so we could get some pictures and video of the Iwo Jima as it is today. Once on the ground I took the long walk across the island to get to the top of Mount Suribachi. This is where the Marines raised the America flag on day four of the battle. It took another month for the Marines to control the entire island.

I brought with me a picture of Woody Williams, who earned his Medal Or Honor during the battle of Iwo Jima. Woody was the oldest Medal of Honor recipient from WWII and died last year at 98 years old. Before his death the Woody Williams Foundation placed over a hundred Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments across our country.
