Jack Voltaic the Game: How Geographic Information Systems (3GIS) can be used in games

Follow
GIScience

In this video, Software Engineer Emily Nack discusses her experiences building the Jack Voltaic game. The Jack Voltaic game combines real world Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data sets into a professional video game environment designed to simulate cybersecurity attacks on critical civil infrastructure.

More specifically, Emily discusses the specific GIS software operations that were used to build the game that include (a) finding and incorporating real world, relevant GIS data used in the game, (b) sharing GIS data sets using ArcGIS Pro desktop software in threedimensional formats to ArcGIS online so the data could be incorporated into a game environment via the ArcGIS Maps SDK for Unity, and (c) building of the game itself using various GIS tools inside of Unity along with C# code. Emily then does a demonstration of the Jack Voltaic game.

If you are looking for practical lessons learned on how to use GIS technology to build video games, this video will be a very useful guideline on steps that you can follow for building your own games. Emily also talks about the broader implications of the Jack Voltaic game and the use of GIS in game building.

This video was recorded during a lecture at the Rochester Institute of Technology in fall of 2022.
