You can make an axe puck that is probably as good or better than any others on the market for very cheap. This King brand 250/1000 grit stone is usually 20.00 or less. Since it is 8 inches, you can cut off one end to use for sharpening your axes, and still have a quality 6 inch two sided sharpening stone left over. The stone cuts fast, but is finer than any commercial axe puck I've seen on the market.

Update: I've used this for two seasons. It is pretty thin, but it has worked very well and I"m perfectly happy with it. I will probably make another one when this is worn out. there is one new one on the market that I'll be testing, but otherwise, I think this is probalby by far the best stone for the money, if not just the best stone straight up. They wear fast and need to be ground flat occasionally, but it's very easy to flatten.
