This topic comes up frequently with young jazz players and with classical players who are just starting to work on jazz.
I think that jazz articulation is all about FEEL and FACILITY. Does the pattern & character swing/groove the way you hear it in your “mind’s ear”? Does it fit the technical demands of the passage?
But truly...as with virtually all playing topics, it’s gotta come from CONCEPT that you’ve developed through superfocused, detailsoriented LISTENING.
My jazz articulation models when I was first learning how to play were Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Wynton Marsalis, and Clifford Brown.
Who are yours?? :D
