Jesus and the Woman at the Well

Follow
LOC Radio

Jesus breaks with social customs to minister to a woman at a well.

This video has been designed to be used in small groups. When you have gathered your group, begin with prayer.

Icebreaker: When you were growing up, who were the people that you were told to avoid?

Watch the video. Use the head questions to help the group retell the story. Then read the text, John 4:330, 3942. Use the rest of the questions to spark some conversation.

Head Questions – get the facts straight
1. Where is Jesus in this story?
2. Who comes to the well?
3. What does Jesus ask of her?
4. What is her reaction?
5. What does Jesus tell her about herself?
6. How does she change the subject?
7. What does Jesus say about worship?
8. How does this lead to a revealing of Jesus as Messiah?
9. What does the woman do next?
10. How do the disciples react to Jesus speaking to a woman?
11. How does the community react to the woman’s news?
12. Who does the community declare Jesus to be?

Heart Questions – dig deeper
1. Most times, water would be carried in the cool of the day. Why do you think this woman came to the well at noon?
2. How do you see the woman misunderstanding what Jesus meant by living water? How are spiritual concepts difficult for you to understand?
3. How do you see Jesus confronting the woman about her lifestyle? What does this say to us today as we confront sin?
4. How do you see the woman changing the topic quickly? When have you done something similar?
5. How do you see Jesus turning the conversation back to His purpose?
6. What do you think it means to worship in spirit and truth? How can we do this today?
7. This is the only time Jesus overtly says he is the Messiah until Holy Week. Why do you think He revealed this to a Gentile woman and not to the Jews?
8. Water jars were expensive and a necessary household item. Why do you think the woman left the jug to go back into town?
9. This woman seems to be shunned by the community; why do you think they listened to her story about Jesus? Whose testimony about Jesus are you more apt to pay attention to?
10. Why do you think the disciples did not question Jesus about breaking social rules as He spoke to the Samaritan woman? What should this teach us today?
11. Why do you think this Samaritan town asked a Jew to stay with them to teach them?
12. What difference did it make for the people to hear the word from Jesus versus secondhand from the woman? How might reading Scripture for ourselves instead of just getting it secondhand from a pastor make the same difference today?
13. What does this story show about the people God can use?
14. What does this story teach us about God? About humanity?

Hands Questions – application
1. What have you learned that will help you on your faith journey?
2. What is today’s theme?
3. How will you act on what you learned today?
