Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), a leading developer of electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles for commercial passenger service, has announced that its subsidiary H2FLY has completed the world's first piloted flight of a liquid hydrogenpowered electric aircraft. This achievement marks a significant step toward decarbonizing mid to longrange aviation.

Using cryogenicallystored liquid hydrogen instead of gaseous hydrogen, they achieved an extended range from 466 miles (750 km) to 932 miles (1500 km). The success is a result of Project HEAVEN, supported by European governments, and now, H2FLY is focusing on commercialization, including developing fuel cell systems for commercial hydrogenelectric aircraft.
