Johannes Vermeer was born in Delft, Holland The Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age. Throughout his life he struggled with financial difficulties despite having multiple businesses and being in contact with many notables of the day. He painted the famous Girl with a Pearl Earring which today is compared to the Mona Lisa. Johannes was never really famous during his life but was successful enough to be able to sell his works with above average pricing. It wasn't until the 19th century that he was rediscovered by museum director Gustav Waagen and published in Théophile ThoréBürger's art catalogue that worldwide recognition soon appeared.

Today his paintings can be sold for more than $40 million and the acclaimed movie Girl With the Pearl Earring (2003) was written about him.
