John Dowell: A Public Intimate Space

Follow
Barnes Foundation

Taking place on December 8 at 7pm, join us for this immersive performance piece, created by artist John E. Dowell, Jr., blending movement, sound, and photography to explore the sacred nature of the public square—in this case, Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square.

A Public Intimate Space transforms the Annenberg Court at the Barnes with Dowell's towering images of Rittenhouse Square, music from composer Maya Miro Johnson, and a chorus of dancers led by choreographer Zane Booker. Dancers for this evening’s performance include Arabia Richardson, Xavier Santafield, and Caylah Teter.

The performance, Dowell says, intends to “reveal past and present souls while invoking and visualizing the power of memory within the public square.”

Presented in partnership with the Curtis Institute of Music.

About The Barnes Foundation:
The mission of the Barnes is to promote the advancement of education and the appreciation of the fine arts and horticulture.

Our founder, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, believed that art had the power to improve minds and transform lives. Our diverse educational programs are based on his teachings and oneofakind collections.

Philadelphia art collector, Albert C. Barnes (1872–1951), chartered the Barnes Foundation in 1922 to teach people from all walks of life how to look at art. Over three decades, he collected some of the world’s most important impressionist, postimpressionist, and modern paintings, including works by Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, and Picasso. He displayed them alongside African masks, native American jewelry, Greek antiquities, and decorative metalwork.
