Johnston Atoll once boasted an outdoor movie theater. The weather is nice year round and consistent enough that it just made sense to build it without any walls or ceilings!
In 20032004 the Air Force closed Johnston and that meant everything had to go, even the seats from the theater. Now all that remains is the concrete slab where the chairs were bolted. Trees have grown up around the slab but haven’t gotten a toehold in the concrete… yet.
Since it might interest a few viewers I’ve also include footage of the current state of a few of the former landscaping plants that were near the theater. If you watch till the end you’ll notice that the aloe and cactus are doing very well indeed! Protected from the wind by the hale koa trees, the cactus grows taller than ever!
