Juliana Nkrumah: Fighting Female Genital Mutilation in Australia | ABC Conversations Podcast

Juliana Nkrumah is the manager of gender equality and women’s safety with Settlement Services International.

She was part of the first team to understand and ban Female Genital Mutilation in Australia.

She was born by the sea in Saltpond, Ghana, in a house that held four generations of her family, including her beloved grandmother.

Education became a ticket to safety and security when her home life deteriorated, and while at school, Juliana met her husband, who still teases her about their first meeting, when she couldn't look at him.

Before immigrating to Australia, the young couple lived in Zimbabwe, just as Robert Mugabe came to power, and locals and expats alike started to disappear.
