Join Ashley, one of our ships’ crew, as she introduces the JamestownYorktown Foundation’s replica ship Discovery. This replica Discovery was built in Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Maine in 2006 and delivered to the Foundation in 2007 for the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown.

The Discovery was the smallest of the three vessels that set sail for Virginia in December 1606, having a cargo capacity of 20 tun, compared to Godspeed’s 40 tun and Susan Constant’s 120 tun. Discovery was purchased by the Virginia Company and intended to stay and serve the colonists in the waterways of Virginia, while the Susan Constant and Godspeed returned to England. Often overlooked, a fourth vessel – a shallop – was also brought for service in Virginia as well, which was packed on one of the ships and assembled once the fleet had arrived in Virginia.
