Kai Tak airport was the main airport serving Hong Kong from 1925 to 1998. It was one of the busiest airports in the world, handling over 30 million passengers a year at its peak. Despite its short runway, unique approach, and challenging weather conditions, Kai Tak was able to accommodate a large number of flights and airlines, making it an important hub for air travel in Asia. The airport was replaced by the larger and more modern Hong Kong International Airport, which opened in 1998, and now handles over 74 million passengers per year.
