Kamakura, just about an hour from Tokyo, is a perfect day trip destination. It's a town where you can explore shrines, temples, enjoy coastal and mountain scenery, and experience Japanese culture that varies with the seasons.
I'm sightseeing by foot and bike. In the afternoon, I tried to visit four temples and the Great Buddha, plus Hasedera Temple, all in 3 hours. But it feels rushed.
Expect crowds during hydrangea and autumn foliage seasons, so plan for a relaxed itinerary.
