Kambo: Sacred medicine of the Amazon Forest with the Noke Koi

Deep in the Amazon rainforest, amidst the symphony of life, the Noke Koi people have forged a unique bond with a creature both feared and revered the giant monkey frog, known to them as 'Kampô'. From its potent secretions, they derive a traditional medicine, a ritual purge known as 'Kambo'.

The process begins at dawn, as the hunters venture into the rainforest, their keen eyes scanning the canopy for the distinctive silhouette of the Kampô. Once captured, the frog is gently restrained, and its skin is carefully irritated, stimulating the release of a milky secretion. This secretion, a cocktail of bioactive peptides, is collected onto small wooden sticks.

Back in the village, the Kambo ritual commences. The participants gather, their bodies adorned with traditional markings. The Kambo sticks are then applied to small burns on the skin, allowing the potent secretion to enter the bloodstream.

The effects are swift and dramatic. The body reacts violently, purging itself through vomiting and diarrhea. It's an ordeal, a trial by fire, but the Noke Koi believe it cleanses the body and spirit, warding off illness and misfortune.

And indeed, there is growing scientific evidence to support these traditional beliefs. Kambo's peptides have been shown to possess antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, and even painrelieving properties. They may also stimulate the immune system and improve cardiovascular health.

In the heart of the Amazon, then, the Kambo ritual stands as a testament to the profound connection between the Noke Koi and their environment. It's a reminder that nature, in its infinite wisdom, holds the keys to healing and wellbeing, and that ancient traditions, passed down through generations, often harbor secrets that science is only just beginning to unravel.
