Follow
Well Travelled Life

Swimming with dolphins and seals on Kangaroo Island, Australia is an unforgettable experience. Kangaroo Island is home to a large population of wild dolphins and seals, making it the perfect place to get up close and personal with these amazing creatures.

There are several companies that offer dolphin and seal swimming tours on Kangaroo Island, and many of them also include underwater photography as part of the package. These tours typically last around three hours and include a guided snorkeling experience with trained professionals who will help you get the most out of your encounter with these playful marine mammals.

During the tour, you'll have the opportunity to swim and play with both dolphins and seals in their natural habitat. Dolphins are incredibly curious and will often swim right up to you, giving you the chance to interact with them up close. Seals are also very friendly and playful, and they love to show off their acrobatic skills in the water.

The underwater photography aspect of the tour is a fantastic way to capture your experience and create lasting memories. Professional photographers will take photos and videos of you as you swim with the dolphins and seals, and you'll receive a digital copy of all the images to take home with you.

It's important to note that all tours are conducted in a responsible and respectful manner, and the safety of both the animals and the participants is always a top priority. Participants are required to wear wetsuits and snorkeling gear, and no previous snorkeling experience is necessary.

Overall, swimming with dolphins and seals on Kangaroo Island is an incredible experience that you won't soon forget. It's a mustdo activity for anyone visiting the island, and the opportunity to capture your encounter with these amazing creatures through underwater photography only adds to the magic of the experience.

Kangaroo Island, a short ferry off the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia is a tourist paradise. With one third of the island preserved for wildlife, there's no chance you won't run into an Australian native. Kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, penguins, seals and dolphins abound but so do the friendly folks who have called this island home for generations. For cruise passengers, Penneshaw is a tender port. Where the tender boats land at the pier, you can walk up the hill and take the coast trail to the right or take the road to the left that will lead to the sculpture trail, the Middle Terrace (Main Street), and on to Christmas Cove. The Tourist Information Office opposite Christmas Cove is also home to Ocean Safari offering opportunities to swim with the local furs seals and resident colony of bottle nose dolphins. Exploring the small town of Penneshaw will put you in touch with local people at the market, and wildlife along the sculpture trail.

Getting out into the water will give you an up close and interactive experience in the wild with dolphins and seals. I booked with Ocean Safari and they made the day perfect. They'll outfit you with wetsuits, snorkels, masks, fins, life preservers and jackets. The group I went with were chilled to the bone and we were there on a sunny day, so the jackets were a bonus for them. Bring an underwater action camera as the water is clear and the animals are friendly.

To get to Flinders Chase National Park on the west side of the island, Seal Bay or the Wilderness Trail, you'll need to plan at least an hour in travel time to get there. You'll find the Remarkable Rocks, the Admiral's Arch and great hiking trails.

But you can't do it all in a day! As the locals tell us, you need at least 4 or 5 days to get to each of the 5 regions, enjoy the variety of activities and have a bit of down time too. With excellent accommodation and so much to do, I'm sure we'll be back to Kangaroo Island! Recorded December 11, 2022.
