Kathanayakan is a 1997 Malayalam Movie. Directed by Rajasenan, Kathanayakan stars Jayaram and Divya Unni in lead roles while an ensemble of established actors K.P.A.C. Lalitha, Janardhanan, Kalabhavan Mani and Bindu Panicker among others play supporting roles.

SYNOPSIS

The film opens with Bindu Panicker and Janardhanan's wedding. Divya Unni, a school teacher, is the bride's sister. They are shown to live together in a joint family with extended relatives who all handle the family business together. They are shown not mixing their personal and professional lifes thus following all rules very strictly. They all even have allocations in the number of soaps per month depending on the size of the family. Divya Unni's grandfather is the head of the family. Everyone obeys his words no questions asked. The elder soninlaw tries to establish supremacy in the family by making everyone obey his words. But K.P.A.C. Lalitha succeeds in thwarting his attempt to do so.

Jayaram joins the family to handle their finances. It is shown that Jayaram may have hidden motive in working for the family. He enters into a fight with Divya Unni when she asks for extra money. She complains to her grandfather but Jayaram cleverly handles the situation. Jayaram is shown to be a highly talented musician as well resulting in a competition between him and Divya Unni to show who is better.

It is revealed that the male members of the family are secretly hoping to end the joint family system and take the wealth for themselves. The soninlaw overhears them and is shushed by them. They all secretly hope for the death of their parents so they can take over the wealth.

Jayaram joins in Divya unni's school as parttime teacher on her grandfather's recommendation. In the school application form, Jayaram fails to fill his father's name. Divya Unni makes fun of him for not knowing his father's name and this angers him. She accuses him of slapping her and the family turns against him. He is forced to apologise and insulted in front of everyone. The family members plot to send out Jayaram. Divya Unni threatens to go on a hunger strike until Jayaram leaves. Jayaram is forced to leave when he is accused of trying to usurp their property.

The grandfather realises Jayaram is a good guy and asks his friend to tell the truth about him. It is revealed that Jayaram is his son. The grandfather had had an illicit affair with a woman which resulted in her pregnancy. She gave birth to a boy which was Jayaram. Jayaram had only come to the family to meet his father and not for his property. He also asks him not to reveal his real identity.

What happens next forms the crux of the story. Will Jayaram's real identity be revealed? Will he be accepted in the family? Will he be successful in thwarting the sons' evil plans to usurp the property?
