Katherine of Aragon was born in 1485 to Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. She was betrothed as an infant to Prince Arthur, the heir to the English throne, and the two were married in 1501 when Katherine was sixteen. However, the union was shortlived as Arthur died only five months after the wedding. In 1509, Henry VIII ascended to the throne and one of his first decisions was to marry Katherine. While Katherine had several pregnancies, only one of them resulted in a living child, a daughter called Mary.
As the couple grew older Henry became increasingly concerned that he did not have a male heir. Henry had also become obsessed with one of Katherine's ladiesinwaiting, Anne Boleyn. After protracted debate and deliberations, Henry settled his mind on the belief that God had always been against his marriage to Katherine. This, he believed, was evidenced in the fact that God had not granted the couple a male heir. He had also been persuaded that as God's anointed in England he did not need an intermediary, in the form of the Pope in Rome, between himself and God.
In 1533, Henry had himself declared Head of the Church in England. The Reformist Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas Cranmer, announced the annulment of the marriage between Henry and Katherine on 23rd May.
Katherine refused to accept the annulment of her marriage or her demotion to The Dowager Princess of Wales, in recognition of her marriage to Henry's late brother, Arthur. She was banished from court and refused access to her only daughter.
In 1536, Katherine died at the age of 50, still believing herself to be Henry's wife and still having not seen her beloved daughter, Mary.
