In times of disruption or engineering work, TransPennine Express must be able to maintain at least a reduced service, especially where the main connections with Manchester Airport is concerned. Arrangements for trains to be diverted are made with Network Rail and drivers must learn these diversions. In order to keep competency over them, trains are often routed that way on night services. It helps drivers keep competency and it gives Network Rail some access to the very busy core route via Huddersfield and Dewsbury. The Coronavirus pandemic has seen a suspension of night services so some of the daytime trains to Redcar Central and back have been purposely diverted via these diversions to maintain driver competency.
