Original BookletText:

"Tatort" is the longest running crime series in the history of German televison and its title theme is nearly as familiar as the national anthem. From its first episode "Tatort" (which means scene of the crime) has been a synonym for "high class thriller" and its trailer music is the signal to leave the dirty dishes in the kitchen and head straight for the TV screen. But it is only during the endtitles that the infectious groove, created by German jazz maestro Klaus Doldinger, unfolds its full madness. Drummer Udo Lindenberg (who would rise to stardom as the first rockstar to sing in German) and bassist Lothar Meid (who later played regularly with German krautrockers Amon Düül II) both members of Doldinger's fusion band Motherhood deliver a sweat drenched performance while Doldinger himself grinds his Hohner Clavinet with a heavy wahwah effect. Part of the jazz scene since the early 50s, the composer had played with nearly every jazz musician in Europe, lead his own quartet, and had released several records worldwide the more commercial ones under his Pseudonym Paul Nero. With his fusion band Passport Doldinger became an international superstar. Together with Passport he rerecorded the "Tatort" theme for Atlantic Records. That version, however, is not half as raw and powerful as the original TV version which comes directly from the composer's archive and sees its first commercial release here.
