When to Stop Painting - How to Paint Peacock Feathers

Follow
Carla Grace

As an artist, I struggle with knowing when to stop painting. Adding more brushstrokes makes the work more interesting, but I've learned that continuing too much can ruin it. It took years to learn not to overwork a painting and to trust my instinct to stop.

That said, in my latest peacock feather study tutorial, I still found it hard to stop. In this sneak peek, I demonstrate how to fill in the feathers and quickly add details to achieve a realistic result. I'll use yellows, blues, and blacks to create texture, starting with darker tones and adding lighter ones.

But as you will see towards the end, I still struggle to know when to stop adding details and move on to the next section. Knowing when to stop requires confidence and practice, and you need to trust your instincts to avoid overworking it.
