On the eighth day of our Kolkata to Tripura Bike Trip we visited the Unakoti Rock Carvings, which is also known as the Angkor Wat of the NorthEast, situated in the Kailashahar subdivision of Unakoti district, near Dharmanagar in Tripura. In the morning we reached Dharmanagar from Jampui hills (the highest point of Tripura) and boarded at Hotel Asha near Dharmanagar railway station. Immediately we left for exploring the Shaiva Teertha Unakoti which is at a distance of around 18 km from our hotel. The road conditions were as usual poor, but we have already grown used to with that after riding for a week in Tripura. In local Kokborok language it is called Subrai Khung. I was quite excited about this site for the stories heard so far. It was put on the UNESCO World Heritage Site tentative list in 2022. There are many mythological stories behind this site. The most common tale tells that once Lord Shiva along with many other deities rested here for the night while going to Varanasi. Shiva asked others to start next morning before sunrise. But no one could wake up in time and Shiva left alone cursing others that they will turn into stones. There were all total one crore (koti) deities including Shiva. Hence it is said that this place has ninety nine lakh nine hundred and ninety nine stone sculptures in this place because "Unakoti" means one less than one crore. History, however, suggests that the sculptures were made during 67th century AD. I am not going to describe the beauty and sculptural wonder of the place here. Viewers will find that in the video. There is no entry fee for Unakoti; only you have to register at the gate. But DSLR camera and action camera are prohibited inside the compound. Next day we will leave Tripura and start for Shillong again. Please keep watching our channel "Sudurer Piyasi" for the upcoming videos.
