Kotohiragu Shrine , or, more familiarly, Kompirasan, in Kagawa Prefecture is the most famous shrine in Japan dedicated to the guardian gods of the sea. This shrine is located on Zozusan, a mountain shaped like an elephant, and 785 stone steps must be climbed to reach the main shrine.

During the Edo period (16031867), when pilgrimage was the only form of travel permitted to common folk, people dreamed of "making a pilgrimage to KOTOHIRAGu". Still, today, visitors to Shikoku from all over Japan make a particular point of visiting Kompirasan.
