In 1999, the small developer studio Sacnoth, founded by former Squaresoft composer Hiroki Kikuta released Koudelka for the Sony PlayStation, a strange and unexpected hybrid of Survival Horror, Immersive Sim and classic JRPG gameplay. It was a title whose development cycle saw a lot of turbulence and its unconventional genreblend was not well received by the gaming press at the time. But Koudelka is a forgotten gem that has so much more to offer than it seems at first glance. A refreshingly small and personal story for a JRPG in an unspent setting in early 20th century rural Wales realized with surprisingly good character, motion and voice acting for its time that’s still engaging to play – and ultimately ignited one of the most beloved series in JRPG history: Shadow Hearts.
