Kyphosis of the spine is a common diagnosis given to scoliosis patients. The normal curvatures of the spine help make it strong, resistant to gravity, provide flexibility and range of motion and help distribute mechanical stress that occurs when there is movement. These normal curves are in the neck, thoracic and lumbar spine.

The lordosis occurs naturally in the neck and the lumbar spine. These are portions of the spine that is supposed to bend inwards. The kyphosis is another naturally occurring curve, but this one bends outwards from the thoracic part of the body.

When thinking about normal curves, it's normal for the cervical and lumbar spine to have a lordosis or Cshaped inward curvature. For the thoracic spine, then we will find the kyphosis, which is the exact opposite of a lordosis, but it is normal in this part of the spine.

Having a kyphosis on the cervical spine or lumbar spine is considered abnormal. The same goes for having a lordosis of the thoracic spine.

These normal curves also have a normal expected range. In the thoracic spine, a kyphosis should be between 2040 degrees. The kyphosis and the lordosis need to be in a certain range to be considered normal. When the kyphosis exceeds 50 degrees, this is called hyperkyphosis which means there is more of it than it should, and we ought to reduce it.

Common symptoms of hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine are:
Rounding of the shoulders of the upper back
