La Camera dei Giganti - Palazzo Te Mantova

Sigfrido Millequadri

In this video I will try to introduce you to the Chamber of the Giants, one of the most spectacular environments of the entire painting. That of the Giants should be correctly defined as a room and not a hall as we often read, this is because within Palazzo Te there is only one room, that of the Horses, the others are precisely called rooms.

During the video I will first try to contextualize this famous work. We will therefore have to mention only the splendor of Mantua, Isabella d 'Este and her son Federico II Gonzaga who commissioned the work to Giulio Romano, a great pupil of Raphael and a prominent figure in her workshop.

We will then enter into the detail of the room, a space totally enveloped by the frescoes designed by Giulio Romano and made by his assistants.

Nothing can replace a visit to Palazzo Te and specifically to the Chamber, but with the help of numerous images I will try to show you at least the salient details of the work. As always, my videos have only an introductory character and I therefore refer you to specialist studies for further information. My goal is to stimulate your curiosity and ignite the passion for works of art in you with the hope of being able to admire them from life one day.

The construction of the Chamber of the Giants dates back to the period between 1532 and 1535, a period of splendor for the city of Mantua. Frederick II, who entrusted the project of Palazzo Te to Giulio Romano, was the son of Isabella d’Este, a woman of great historical importance and a great lover of the arts. Isabella d’Este, for example, had a private studio built, which was later dismembered, with works by Mantegna, Perugino, Lorenzo Costa and Correggio.

The son of Isabella D’Este, Federico II Gonzaga, supported his mother in the initiatives to enhance the court starting from 1520 after his return from Rome and gave a modern twist to Mantuan art.

Frederick II, who received the title of Duke from Emperor Charles V, called Giulio Romano to himself in 1524, entrusting him with the project of a residence outside the walls, what will become the famous Palazzo Te which contains, among other wonders, the Chamber of Giants. This residence outside the court was born as a place to welcome and entertain guests. Known as the "villa of delights" it was a residence of pleasure and leisure that Federico II also wanted to meet his lover Isabella Boschetti.
