In contrast to the High Middle Ages, the early Middle Ages were a time of greater nutritional prosperity. Monasticism had generated a very different mentality from that of the lords, presided over by frugality, continence and selfcontrol. The 12th century German abbess Hildegard von Bingen, known as the Sibyl of the Rhine for her visionary and prophetic gifts, wrote medicinal works based on the theory of the four humours and what we know today as naturopathy, with an emphasis on dietetics and phytotherapy. Hildegardian dietetics are a holistic process and for her, we are what we eat and our food should be our medicine. In this episode we will review the main characteristics of the diet recommended by the abbess.
