In certain areas of Mexico, some people worship Santa Muerte. Despite the condemnation of the Catholic Church, its cult has become increasingly widespread, being especially relevant in the socalled narcoculture.
Santa Muerte almost always appears as a female skeletal figure, dressed in a long robe and holding a scythe. Her devotees adore her because they associate her with healing, protection and safe delivery to the afterlife.
The cult of Santa Muerte was first reported in Mexico by American anthropologists in the 1940s and was an occult practice until the early 2000s.
The number of believers in Santa Muerte has grown exponentially in the last two decades to an estimated 12 million followers.
