L.A. Tenants Win Groundbreaking $2.5 Million Settlement in Housing Discrimination Lawsuit

In November 2016, Public Counsel, Skadden, and others filed a federal housing discrimination lawsuit on behalf of 13 tenants in five Koreatown buildings, and two nonprofits, StepUp on Second and Strategic Actions for a Juste Economy (SAJE). The suit alleged that a L.A. based real estate investment firm targeted Spanishspeaking tenants, tenants with mental disabilities, and families with children — blanketing them with unmerited eviction notices, leaving their units in disrepair, and verbally attacking their disabilities and national origin in a concerted effort to remove them from the buildings.

In October 2018, a judge has approved a settlement and dismissed the case. The Plaintiffs were represented by Public Counsel, the Housing Rights Center, Public Advocates Inc., Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, and Brancart & Brancart.
