Bullet trains are finally coming to the U.S. through the mega project known as Brightline West, promising a speedy 2hour trip from LA to Las Vegas. This groundbreaking project, recently initiated, presents a perfect opportunity to delve into its details. The video will cover aspects such as the train's speed, taxpayer contributions, and more.

Historically, America has been lukewarm towards highspeed passenger rail. Despite early locomotive achievements in the 19th century, postWWII legislation favored cars and jets, leaving rail development lagging. Efforts to establish highspeed rail, like the TurboTrain and Metroliner, were hindered by design flaws and inadequate infrastructure. However, in the early 2000s, DesertXpress Enterprises sought to connect LA and Vegas with a highspeed rail, overcoming numerous funding and regulatory challenges. By 2018, Fortress Investment Group rebranded the project as Brightline West, with groundbreaking finally occurring in April 2024.

The planned route runs primarily along Interstate 15, with future extensions potentially reaching major cities like Phoenix and Denver. The trains will navigate steep grades with the help of highpower engines, comparable to Japan’s Shinkansen bullet trains. Brightline West, selecting Siemens' Velaro Novo trains, aims for speeds up to 200 mph.

Funding for this $12 billion project is a mix of public and private contributions, including a $3 billion federal grant and significant investments from California and Nevada. Private activity bonds and additional private financing cover the remaining costs, demonstrating a model that balances public benefit with minimal taxpayer burden. Brightline West is expected to reduce vehicle traffic on I15, lower CO2 emissions, and generate substantial tax revenues and jobs, aiming to be operational by the 2028 Summer Olympics in LA.
